We are elated to announce that with this year’s fundraising efforts, we have been able to raise $14,602 for our philanthropy from hosting our annual and national Literacy Through Unity Week. Literacy Through Unity Week is a series of events dedicated to raise awareness of our philanthropy, and aims to raise funds to give to charitable organizations. We could not be more proud of our members working so hard this year to make this generous donation happen.
This year’s funds will benefit Pratham’s Second Chance program. Second Chance focuses on providing school drop-outs, especially women, another chance at education. Statistics suggest that although most children in India go to primary school, about 70% of students drop out before completing Grade 10. This means that a large portion of children are ineligible to apply for jobs in any sector that requires higher education. Second Chance aims to support those who could not complete their secondary education by providing opportunities for educational growth and employability.
A special shout out to our Rho Chapter at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, for raising the most; an amazing $3,200! Members of Rho Chapter tabled at their university every day during their Literacy Through Unity Week. During this time, they collected donations and hosted fun events such as bake sales, a photo booth, a “What Education Means to You” poster board sharing, and other social events. In addition, they gave out a YETI cooler with a customized vinyl to the Greek organization who donated the most during the week. Thank you ladies for the tremendous work you put in for your philanthropy week, and raising the most funds!
While our upmost important objective is to bring awareness to Children’s Education and Literacy, we would like to thank all of our incredible schools for the time and dedication they put in towards our annual Literacy Through Unity Week this year. Without your efforts, we could not have done this. We only hope to see this momentum going throughout the years.
